Dana´s Bengallight Adolf - "Aatu"

Aatu was born in 18th January 1997 at.17.30 pm in city of Kauniainen which is near Helsinki. He is mustard coloured and as you could perhaps find out by his name - a male. We got Aatu when he was 10 months old and before that Aatu lived in several diffrent homes.

Minna considered having a dog for a long time but she had not planned to have a dandie. In the end Minna decided to give a home to a dog which needs to be rehomed. So she contacted the SPCA where she volunteered at that time and told that she would like to offer a home for a small dog. It did not matter if it would be purebred or not. The only thing that mattered was that it should have been get used to cats or else have a character that it could get used to live with cats. Minna loved to go outing so she just wanted to have some one to go outing with. She had a dog when she was still living with her mom so she knew what it was like to own a dog.

So she left her name and address to SPCA and Aatu´s breeder got that information there. She wanted to have permanent home for Aatu who ahd already got several homes even though he was not more than 10 months old. So on one tuesday Minna´s phone rang and two days later Minna visited Aatu´s breeder and came home there with a dog! Aatu was said to be aggressive and to destroy furniture but he showed to be far from that! Not a single chewed item at our home and never has he used his teeth to us! So we got a wonderful dog more then ten years ago and he is still going strong. He was and is much more than we could hope for and he for sure has been loved to bits!

Aatu was called by his kennel name "Adolf" by his breeder but we decided to change it. We were thinking of Snoopy or else Konsta but in the end he turned out to be Aatu. So he had to learn a new name plus he also had to learn a new language! He had been in swedish speaking families and we speak finnish.

Aatu has always been calm. And now when he is old he is naturalley even more calm. But yet he has never been lazy. He is smart and clever and nowdays when he is older he has such wisdom which makes us often amazed. Also his personality has grown stronger year by year. He is like a quality labeled wine - getting older but better - year by year. Aatu is Minna´s apple of the eye. He has always been like that but now when he is older he is even more of it! He has some priviledges girls don´t have.

Aatu is the boss of our little pack. He is gentle leader but also very specific about his position in the order. He has never used his teeth to girls but he uses different kind of methods. He is very good at using calming signals and he has teached girls to use them too and find out their position in the pack without fights. Aatu has never liked another adult males though. He has only few males which are more than one year old of which he likes and gets along with - others he just can´t stand. But he loves all girls and ofcourse puppies as well! And actually he is great with puppies! Never have we thought of keeping Aatu in separate room with puppies because he is 100% worth trusting with them. We think that Aatu´s way to behave when we meet other males is sometimes quite annoying. But when he came to us we took part to obedience training with him so we can handle him also in these situations. Everything is ok as long as those other males don´t come too close to Aatu´s face. Then he just has to start growling.

Aatu is afraid of loud noices. So he is afraid of fireworks and thunder. That means that when we know that fireworks are coming we go to summercottage where it is always nice and quiet. Aatu has not always been like that but this started when he was about 5 years old. Minna was outing with him and young boys wanted to tease people passing by. They sneeked behind snow walls and shooted some fireworks towards Minna and Aatu and one of them hit Minna´s leg and exploded right above Aatu´s head. That is when it all started.

Aatu´s favourite games are fetching ball or stick and tug-of-war. These games are not played very often because of Aatu´s back problems he used to have. And also to keep stress hormone levels low because he is getting quite "hot" when we play games like these with him. He also loves to chew soft toys into thousand pieces! Aatu loves to walk in the forest. And he loves lakes, rives, streams, pools....all kind of places with water in them. He is not swimming but he loves to sit or stand in the water. And he loves his voice! At home he is quite quiet fellow but when we go outing or else to summer cottage he just has to talk and talk. And he also welcomes people by barking...which makes many people to think that he is angry...which he ofcourse is not.

Aatu´s favourite foods are liver paste, cheese, chicken and ofcourse also sausage :-)

Aatu has some nicknames - here are few of them: Ade, Big-A, Tohveli, Toffi and Ukkeli.

Aatu´s health in a nutshell

* Aatu is about 15kg

* Badly overshot mouth - about 1,5 cm

* One missing testicle (missing one removed by surgery at 1998)

* 2 x slipped disk, the same disk on both times

* Cutaneous histiocytoma tumours removed by surgery -> on young years 1 x on earflap & 1 x on top of hock.
2008 1 x on right front paw.

* Aatu got all teeth in his mouth but 10 teeth have been taken off by surgery (5 on year 2007 and 5 more on 2008)

Inbreeding and COI

Aatu is linebred to two dogs (which means that he has
two dogs appearing more than one time in his pedigree) and this linbreeding is very mild.

Both of these dogs come from from UK.
