                                                                                                    Glaucoma Research and The Dandie Dinmont Trust 
The Dandie Dinmont Trust is an organization which was started by four people who love the breed called Dandie Dinmont Terrier. These people are Ineke ter Heersche (Netherlands), Celia Danks (Scotland), Margreth Wall (Sweden) and Bronwell Bond (USA). Dandie Dinmont Trust was founded to support Glaucoma Research and also to benefit other health projects. Even though glaucoma is not very common desease among dandies it is painful for the individuaul who gets it.

The DDTrust started to raise funds by printing a cartoon book. It was a humoristic book about how it is to live with dandies. It was a success and first edition was sold out quite quickly. Later the Trust has had also other items for sale to benefit the glaucoma research. Glaucoma research was started in Missouri University in USA. Project was going on to find out the genes which causes glaucoma, to develope DNA test to find out which dandies carry glaucomic genes and also to know more about the genome on dandies. Research was going on for few years and then it was on hold for some time. But now it has started again and this time in Biomedicum which is in Helsinki, Finland. Research in Helsinki is done by Hannes Lohi and his group. DDTrust is still raising funds to benefit this research. Lohi is co-operating with Missouri University group.

Glaucoma Research in Helsinki - Latest news!

    
These are all translations by us so please forgive us the faults we have made on grammer and wocabulary! Hopefully you will get the point anyway :-)

* In July 2008 there were 192 blood samples from Dandies in Helsinki! The target is 200 samples so 8 are still missing. If you own a dandie who has not given sample we would appreciate a lot if you could have it taken and send to Helsinki. Samples are needed from dandies of all ages but especially from those who have got glaucoma and from those who are more than 10 years old and still without any symptoms of glaucoma. You can always contact Ulla Kemppainen to find out more how to take and send the blood samples for Hannes Lohi´s research group. 

* Please remember to keep the research group informed if there is any changes seen in your dog considering glaucoma. You can do the updating by sending email and if you have any vet reports those would be very much appriciated.  

* Blood samples from dandies in Helsinki -> April 2008 there were 190 samples !!

* Lotta Berglund (Sweden) invited 10 dandies and their owners to their home in March 2008. All those dandies gave blood samples which were later send to Hannes Lohi. Thank you for your help!

* Blood samples from dandies in Helsinki -> January 2008 there were 123 samples

* January 2008 - Research Group started mapping the blood samples given by old and glaucomic free dandies. So the owners of dandies older than 10 years got mail from the research group. They wanted to know if those dandies were still healthy and they asked for copies of eye check papers if dog happened to be eye checked. Some owners took their old ones to eye checks to get these papers and to offer more knowledge to Lohi and his group. Isn´t that just great!

* October 2007 Dandie breeders in Czech Republic organised a day where blood samples were collected. Lohi received 21 samples which were taken by Vlad'ka Zvonickova and her husband Josef Zvonicek. Recearh group send the tubes and needels to CZ and Vlad'ka and Pepik sponsored the day. Thank you for your help! 

* During summer and autumn 2007 dandie owners around the world have send blood samples taken from their dandies to Finland. So at the moment there are blood samples for excample from Sweden, Netherlands, Germany, UK, USA, Canada....just to mention few countries. Thank you for these samples! 

* July 2007 - Research group got 40 blood samples from dandies.

* Research news from summer 2007:
"International Dandie Dinmont Trust has decided to fund the research of glaucoma genes. Also finnish DDT Club has funded some money to the research. This gives us a great possibility to progress on finding glaucoma genes. If any one who reads this will own a dandie of whom itself or else who´s close relatives have got glaucoma - please contact the research group. This project is going on with the close co-operation to Dr Gary Johnson and his Research Group in Missouri University. Our target is no less than to find out genes which causes glaucoma and at the same time we hope to benefit the researh on humans as well."

* During the summer 2007 Finnish DDT Club organised two "blood sample collecting days". The other one was held in Helsinki and the other one in Imatra during the Dandie Summer Days of Finnish DDT Club.

*Ulla Kemppainen (Kennel Muumeliinin) contacted Hannes Lohi and his Research Group. Dandies are now included to the Glaucoma Research which is done in Biomedicum, Helsinki
