Joona

Joona came to us via HESY (local SPCA). It was autumn 1994 and Minna volunteered in HESY at that time. Joona was really young when he came. Too young to be away from his mother and siblings. He was only several weeks old when he came. Minna had to feed him by milk which was made by powder. Joona did not start to use his legs normally but he only jumped like a rabbit. Minna decided to keep him incase if he would turn out to some kind of disabled. But when he continued growing he learned also how to walk normally. Joona himself did not mind the jumping at all. He was happy little fellow with lots of energy!

So Joona stayed with Minna and fullfilled the home with laughter and joy. Joona got all kind of ideas and they were not always good ones! One excample is what he did every evening. He ran as fast as he could and the finally jumped to the curtains which dropped down to floor. Then he played on them and in the end they were covered with dozens of tiny little holes! Minna lost several curtains and then she just put simple fabric to windows until Joona was old enough to leave curtains alone. And then he loved to climb to indoor plants! And he broke some towels by chewing their corners. We never knew why he did so but he seemed to enjoy the sound towels made when he chewed them. So puppies are not the only ones who can chew things...kittens may do the same :-)

Joona could say "miuuu" when we asked him to do so. And he could also do some other tricks like give a kiss but he only did these when he thought they amused him. On his older years Joona was lively but not so lively as he was when kitten. Until his very last days Joona was funny and playful and quite full of energy.

Joona was a very very lively kitten and young man. He could hold his endless will to move only for few seconds at the time when he felt like sitting on laps. Then he just had to go and do something else. He played with Altti or else by himself. But he played a lot. ON the old days he sometimes spend 5 minutes on laps which for him was a very long time! And when he licked himself and kept his coat clean he licked for few times and that was it. He was too "busy" to spend more time on cleaning himself. He had better things to do! Joona and Altti sneaked behind each other and they jumped and scrolled on the floor. It was a pure joy to look at those two when they had fun! :-)

Joona was very warm hearted fellow. And for Minna he was almost like "once in a lifetime" cat. Maybe that had something to do with his first weeks when he needed some extra care both during daytime and nighttime. Joona slept on Minna´s pillow with Veera and later also with Ella. And at summer cottage Joona usually walked after Minna where ever she went. Joona also joined the long walks in the woods! Joona had a powerful voice which he used quite often but to Minna he always made very silent voices and sounded more like a kitten than adult cat. Joona loved cheese and cooked liver. And he also liked salmon and smoked turkey meat. And then he had to tell every time he needed to go to litter box :-)

Joona had a very special colour in his coat. He was smoke grey with black "tiger stripes". He had a beautiful black nose and nice green eyes. He was very handsome boy and most visitors fell in love with him immediately when they saw him. And he was quite big even though he wasn´t very heavy. He had long legs and long tail and his coat was not short and not long either but in between. On his last years Joona was very skinny because of his desease.

Poor Joona was healthy almost all his life but then he got his desease and wasn´t ok anymore. During his last three years we visited vet quite often and he got all kind of medicins. What was wrong with him we don´t know excatly. Blood samples were taken many times and he was x-rayed and scanned and the result was that he perhaps got FIP - the dry version of it. He did not have much pain but sometimes when desease was on he lost a lot of weight and was like a walking skeleton. And then he suddenly was better again and back to normal. And he got brown little spots in his irises. He got a good medication and we tried to give him as good diet as possible which made him strong. And all the time he was happy and playful. But then in the January 2007 he went suddenly into quite poor contion. That happened within 2 days and there was not much we could do but to make a very very difficult decison. We could let him go to rainbow bridge.

We took him to Kannelmaki vet clinic on saturday 20th of January 2007 and he was put to sleep at 15.45. It was a beautiful and peaceful moment and we are always grateful for those people on that clinic who made this situation so beautiful. Joona was frozen until next summer and we took him to summer cottage with us and burried him there under a big rock. There is a pink rose growing near his grave.

Joona´s nicknames were: Joona Oinonen, Jonsku, Noonas, Kutale, Puikulapylly, Puikula, Raitapaita, Nokinena, Nando.
