Stories from Aatuīs
life
| These stories
are form the time when Aatu was the only dog in the house.
He was at work with Minna at that time and travelled a lot
with her during their free time and holidays. Dandies are
humoristic dogs and some of these stories are also quite
humoristc. At least we thought so when those thinsg
happened. Hopfeully you will also think so when you read
them...and hopefully they will make you smile a little!

I walked with Aatu in one of Helsinkiīs small
parks. Suddenly I was stopped by a middle-aged
rich-looking Lady with a small chihuahua in her arms. She
told me about those dozens of prizes her PEDIGREE dog has
won. Then she said hello to my Dandie, looked at me and
said:
"Quite beautiful coctail this is, I must admit. They
are not usually this preatty. Do you know what pedigrees
are in it?"
"As a matter of fact I do. His mother is a Dandie
Dinmont Terrier and his father is Dandie Dinmont Terrier...."

Usually Aatu is very calm
dog, but this time he really
was in a hurry. He rushed into bus once door opened, took
place under the first seat, sat down and started to look
ahead like: "Letīs go..hurry up now, will you!"
"What is the matter with him today?" driver
asked.
"His girlfriend is coming to see him." I
answered.
"Dogs donīt understand that kind of stories. I think
he just wants to go home" he taught.
After half and hour drive we arrived to Ilola where we
lived. Bus stopped and the driver could see a golden
retriever with her hostess waiting for us. Next morning I
went to work and had Aatu with me, as I always do. He was
as calm as usually, maybe even little more tired. Bus
happened to have the same driver as a day before:
"Aatu seems to had a good date" he said
"....I wish had had one too

Unknown Lady which sat in train
said:" Wonderful dog! So, so qute....." She hugged and cherished Aatu
about 10 minutes and then she asked: "What kind of
breed is this?"
-"Dandie Dinmont Terrier."
-" A terrier!!??
And she rapidly stopped hugging and moved her ankles
further away so that such a beast couldnīt reach to bite
her...

I walked with Aatu in the middle of the Helsinki during
rush-hour. He looked very consentrated and walked on my
left side near feet with rosy tongue hanging out of his
mouth. He stopped before crossing street, looked deeply
into my eyes, wagged his tail and waited for a promise to
go by. I told him how vice he was and we continued over
street when lights turned out green. Aatu stopped again in
the middle of the street before crossing tramway and same
happened again. And then we crossed another main street
exactly the same way. I was very proud of Aatu and told
him that while aged gentleman came to us: "Excuse me,
may I disturb you two for a while?"
"Oh, sure, ofcourse."
"I have seen those guide dogs trained for blind
people here before, but never so small one. Usually they
are those bigger black or yellow dogs. Retrievers, I guess.
Is this going to guide some child?....

| I wanted to train some obedience with Aatu. So we went to
dog-school. After
few months training we had little competiton amond us trainers. I took part with
Aatu too. Boy I was exited!! Everything went fine until... Aatu sit peacefully
on my left side. I left him, walked away and after our judge said so, I
shouted merrily: "Aatu, come!" He started running towards me as fast
as he could. Then, suddenly, he took right turn and went right next to
judge. He wagged his tail, looked under judges long skirt and barked happily few
times. ( I think he would have even blinked his eye if
possible!!) Then he
started running as fast as he could towards me, which blushing brightly like a
tomato. Everybody laughed tears in their eyes. Aatu was obviously very proud of
his discovery. And because of great succeed he did the trick every time
afterwards....

| Aatu is one of those lucky dogs who can travel almost
everywhere with their owners. Aatu also follows me
into my workingplace. Every morning we walk same bus stop
and every afternoon get off on the other side of the
road. Aatu knows where to go, defenetly. We had
traveled same way to job and back every day during hole
winter. But one day I decided not to get off near our home
but continue to town and buy an ice-cream from market
place. Aatu slept peacefully under my seat. Suddenly
he woke up, started rushing towards bus door, then turned
around, came back to me and looked at me very carefully.
If he could speak he would have said: "You fool! Now
we missed our bus stop!! Get off, we must go now!! Hurry
up, mum..." I told him we shall continue to
town. He went back under my seat and started giving me
ugly looks. I learned my lesson. For now on I always tell
Aatu where we shall go.

| Aatu and I spend one week of our holiday at my friends
summer cottage. Gardening is one of her hobbies so her
garden was full of delicious vextables. We spend lots of
our time eating those goodies. I took Aatu with me
into garden. It felt incredible to pick up one carrot,
take leafs off, sit down and eat it right away. Aatu
liked it too! And he looked carefully how I picked carrots
up. After few days we realised there had been theafs.
Carrots were missing here and there. Only leafs were left
behind. We watched carrots carefully all the time but did
not see anybody around. Carrots continued their
dissapearing. But then, few days later
something happened. I looked out of kitchen window and saw
Aatu walking in garden. He walked around ...and then
suddenly...PUFF...picked one carrot up. He ate it and left
nothing but leafs behind....and then...puff... another
carrot and... another..! When satisfied he came inside the
cottage, drank some water, lied down and started snoring!
He REALLY seemd to enjoy his lunch. When holidays were
over we started out journey home and had two
packadges of carrots. I had one of my own and so did Aatu.
